CARMEL VALLEY, Monterey County — October 27, 2026. A second, separately documented fire-management proposal at Garland Ranch Regional Park focuses on the La Mesa section. A September 16 state filing by the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District describes 39.9 acres of proposed prescribed broadcast burning to reduce accumulated fuels and support grassland and oak savanna.
Different from Garland Meadow
This project has its own State Clearinghouse number, 2026090638, and should not be confused with the larger 102-acre Garland Meadow proposal. The La Mesa filing identifies about 2.5 acres of manual understory thinning and 4.9 acres of mowing as preparatory controls. It says trees larger than eight inches in diameter would be pruned rather than routinely removed, while sensitive habitat receives special protections.
Why planned burns require careful coordination
Reducing continuous grass and brush fuel may limit the spread of unwanted fires and support native vegetation, but prescribed burns also require attention to weather, smoke, operational safety and nearby homes. Environmental filings alone do not prove a burn has taken place or specify a confirmed public-access closure for any particular date.
The park district lists the intended beneficiaries as Carmel Valley residents, surrounding communities, park users and local habitat. Residents can direct technical questions about treatment units and timing to the district’s Planning and Conservation Program.
