CARMEL VALLEY, Monterey County — October 27, 2026. A new public environmental record explains planned wildfire prevention in Garland Ranch Regional Park’s grassland and oak-savanna areas. The Garland Meadow Prescribed Burn Project, filed September 16, covers approximately 102 acres of prospective controlled burning: 90 acres of broadcast fire and 12 acres of pile burning.
What the district proposes
The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District describes preparatory understory thinning on approximately 41.5 acres and mechanical mowing on about 11.5 acres to establish safer control lines. Fire would be used to reduce fuel continuity, discourage invasive annual grasses, support habitat and improve future firefighter access where appropriate.
District materials say treatments are designed to protect sensitive natural and cultural resources. Existing trails and service roads would be used for access rather than constructing new routes, and legacy trees are meant to be retained.
Is a prescribed fire happening today?
Not established by the filing. A California Environmental Quality Act notice records a project and environmental determination; actual ignition requires operational conditions, permits, air-quality and fire-agency coordination. Weather can postpone planned burns. Visitors should rely on the park district’s day-of alerts for smoke or trail restrictions.
